In October 2021, the University of Edinburgh started a long-term project to restore peatland and expand forests in Scotland. The Forest and Peatland Programme will remove carbon from the atmosphere, increase biodiversity, connect woodlands, improve recreation and scenery for local communities, and preserve cultural heritage sites. Our Forest and Peatland sites are living laboratories that create significant collaborative opportunities for research, teaching, and community benefits with a goal to help spread information on climate change and biodiversity loss and ways communities and individuals can help.
